Why Did T.S. Eliot Write ¡¯The Wasteland¡¯?
Lee Byung-Wook

Abstract
T.S. Eliot is a famous American-born British Poet. He got the Nobel Prize in 1948, and his poetry "The Wasteland" has been rated high as the masterpiece of modern intellectualism. I studied Eliot¡¯s ¡¯The Wasteland" in connection with his life and character, and I came to a conclusion as follows. 1. The Wasteland symbolize his ruined marital and mental life at that time. 2. His obssesive-compulsive personality traits created his only unique defensive style such as intellectualization, isolation, reaction formation, rationalization. 3. He feared waste of time, waste of energy, waste of talent, waste of money, and avoided the disgustful women, sex, dirtiness, disorder. 4. He escaped from the affective world to the intellect all through the lifetime. 5. He escaped from his stable mother to an unstable woman, and retaliated on his father by disapproved marriage. 6. He escaped from his native fatherland, but kept his mother-tongue. 7. He escaped from the land of freedom to the land of order. 8. He tried to rationalize his identity confusion with religious conversion. The Wasteland symbolize Eliot¡¯s internal psychic world, and he successfully sublimated his own psychopathology with creative works. T.S. Eliot was not a singing poet with emotion, but a thinking poet without emotion.
